Road to the Esso Cup - Moncton Midget AAA Rockets make program history with a perfect regular season
For the first time in history, the Midget AAA Rockets female hockey program, located in Moncton, NB, completed their final regular season game on Sunday, March 6th with a perfect record. Finishing their final game with a score of 5-2, this sealed the deal for the team giving them a perfect regular season record of 19-0-0. They earned a total of 38 points, a 22-point difference from the second place ranked team.

In the New Brunswick Female Midget AAA Hockey league, the Rockets are led by their top scorers Faith Steeves (32G-17A-49PTS), Lauren Shaw (25G-15A-40PTS), Brooke Murphy (14G-14A-28PTS), and Jessica Cormier (1G-17A-26PTS). This Female Midget AAA team is aiming high as the provincial championship approaches. It will be hosted in St-Stephen, NB, the weekend of March 18th and will be a tournament style weekend. Should the Rockets be successful, they we represent Hockey New Brunswick at the Female Midget AAA Atlantic championship held in Charlottetown, PEI, from March 31st- April 3rd, with a berth to the Esso Cup on the line.

The team is composed of 12 players who have represented Hockey New Brunswick at the annual Atlantic Challenge Cup through Hockey Canada (4 Female Under-16, 8 Female Under-18), have team member Brooke Murphy represent Team Atlantic at the 2015 National Women’s Under-18 championship, and the remaining members all make the final tryout camp to represent their province; an extraordinary number for the brand.

Ever since the program was founded in 2007, the Rockets have clenched 5 Provincial championships and 4 Atlantic championships; 3 of which resulted in the team representing the Atlantic Region at the Esso Cup – Hockey Canada’s National Female Midget AAA Hockey Championship since 2009 (Appearance in 2010, 2014, and 2015).

4 players are currently looking for a 3-peat to the National tournament: Morgan Porter, Brooke Murphy, Faith Steeves and EmmaRae Murphy. The team this year has 11 returning players with Esso Cup experience, and the new faces from the Bantam AAA Rockets earned a silver medal at their Atlantic Championship game in 2015. There is no lack of experience amongst this group of hockey players and they are all familiar with handling pressure situations.

The team is coached by 5 former Atlantic University Sport players: Monika Cormier (Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues), Jocelyn LeBlanc (Dalhousie Tigers), Geneviève David (Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues), Lauren Oickle (Mount Allison Mounties), Megan Colpitts (Mount Allison Mounties), and Megan Corley-Byrne (Mount Allison Mounties). The coaching staff is a dedicated group focused on helping the team achieve the next level, whether it is to once again represent the Atlantic Region in Weyburn, SK, or to see the graduates achieve their dream of playing University caliber hockey. Currently, out of five graduates, all of them have signed to University:

Morgan Porter (Assistant captain)- Mount Allison Mounties
Janelle Graham - Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues
Brooke Murphy (Assistant captain)- Saint Mary’s Huskies
EmmaRae Murphy (Team captain) - Mount Allison Mounties
Faith Steeves (Assistant captain) - University of Prince Edward Island Panthers
In sum, the Rockets program is propelling forward and has seen dozens of players graduate to the University level since its founding. As provincials approach, the goal is once again to see the team crest at the National Championship in Weyburn, SK, from April 17th-23rd. The road to the Esso Cup begins.
